What is CO2 Fractional Laser?
The CO2RE laser is the versatile Fractional CO2 system that has become the “laser of choice” for deep wrinkles or scars (including acne scars) of the skin. In the past, patients traded the excellent results that a CO2 laser provided in skin resurfacing for long recovery periods during which the skin remained quite red.
A new technology was introduced to “fractionate” the CO2 laser beam allowing uninjured islands of skin to remain after treatment. These islands provide much more rapid healing of skin in the treated areas. This wonderful technology provides all the benefits of treatment of deep skin scars and wrinkles without the prolonged recovery associated with older CO2 lasers. The Fractional CO2 Laser is one of the best tools we have for deep skin resurfacing that can be performed alone or in conjunction with other surgical procedures.
Treatment
The goals of treatment with the Fractional CO2 Laser include the improvement of skin tone, color, and texture. Treatments are used to eliminate fine wrinkles and greatly improve the appearance of deep wrinkles. The treatment can be performed under local anesthesia, but it is best to have someone drive you home after the treatment is complete. The treatment for the entire face takes about one hour to complete. There is very little pain associated with the procedure or during the post-treatment period. You will be provided with post-treatment instructions.
You can expect your recovery to take 7-10 days. Your skin will start to look quite improved by that time, and one can be comfortable going out in public. A treatment every 2-3 years is usually sufficient to achieve the goals of most of our patients.

How do I know if CO2 treatments are right for me?
People in their 30s or older with skin damaged from the sun, age spots, fine lines, discoloration, rough skin, and other skin imperfections are ideal candidates. Anyone seeking younger, more youthful, smoother skin with minimal downtime would benefit from this treatment.
What is the CO2RE procedure like?
You can expect some moderate discomfort during treatment, but the topical anesthetic applied prior to the procedure typically makes the pain tolerable. For more aggressive treatments, Dr. Hsu may recommend a subcutaneous anesthetic or oral pain relievers/sedatives during the treatment session. Over-the-counter pain relievers may be taken and often help.
Is CO2RE safe?
Yes. Dr. Hsu will assess if your complete medical and skin history would pose any potential negative reactions prior to your treatment.
How long will the results last?
There are a number of variables that will determine how long you can expect the results to last, including your overall health, age, smoking history and status, and how you care for your skin after treatment. Staying out of the sun and wearing sunscreen on a regular basis is required.
