Breast Reduction Q & A

What is a breast reduction?

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure to remove some of the fat and glandular tissue from your breasts if you feel that they are too large. Also called a reduction mammaplasty, a breast reduction can improve your proportions to alleviate the physical and emotional discomfort associated with having excessive breast tissue.

At Best Impression Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Hsu reviews your goals with you during your consultation to determine if you are a candidate for breast reduction surgery at our private outpatient surgical center. During breast reduction surgery, you will be given general anesthesia.

Breast reduction surgery commonly involves incisions around the areola, vertically on the bottom part of the breast, and horizontally under the breast at the level of the breast crease to access and remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin. The nipple and areola are also repositioned and reduced during a breast reduction.

Who should consider getting a breast reduction?

Breast reduction surgery has a few different benefits. Having smaller, more proportionate breasts can boost your self-confidence and allow you to fit into more comfortable clothing. The surgery can also alleviate the emotional and physical discomfort from having large breasts.

What should I expect during recovery after a breast reduction?

Dr. Hsu gives you a set of clear instructions to follow during the recovery period. This will include taking certain medications to reduce pain and prevent infection. There will also be care instructions for the surgical incision sites. Most patients are able to resume usual daily activities within 1-2 weeks and return to normal exercise and all other activity at 4-6 weeks.
